چکیده
Background/introduction Osteoid osteoma (OO) is a relatively common benign bone tumor (2-3% of all bone tumors, 10% of benign bone tumors) usually developing in children and young adults. It is quite painful and patients typically complain of localized pain that is worse at night and characteristically relieved by non-steroid anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Conventional treatment options include surgery, systemic drugs administration, and imaging guided percutaneous procedures. Minimally invasive procedures are considered of primary importance, and this is even enhanced considering the benign nature of the lesion and the young age of the affected population. CT guided radiofrequency ablation (CTgRFA) is the most popular percutaneous technique with clinical success rate reported between 85% and 98%. However, CTgRFA is still rather invasive, and it requires CT-guidance, with obvious concerns linked to radiosensitivity especially of young patients. MR guided focused ultrasound surgery (MRgFUS) is a minimally invasive procedure that can be performed relatively fast, in a single session and with limited amount of energy deposition and no use of ionizing radiation.

Background MRgFUS represent a new therapeutic option for the non-surgical management of osteoid osteoma. The site of the lesion is the most significant limitation of use of this technique. Purpose of this study is to compare the clinical and morphological two years after the procedure, of the treatment of 28 osteoid osteomas with Magnetic Resonance guided Focus Ultrasound Surgery (MRgFUS) versu...
متن کاملMR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) ablation for the treatment of nonspinal osteoid osteoma: a prospective multicenter evaluation.
BACKGROUND Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a novel imaging-guided surgical technique that allows the performance of noninvasive and radiation-free ablation. Presently, computed tomography (CT)-guided radiofrequency ablation, a minimally invasive percutaneous technique, is the standard for treating symptomatic osteoid osteomas. The purpose of this study was to evaluate t...

متن کاملOsteoid Osteoma Presenting as a Painful Solitary Skull Lesion: A Case Report
Introduction: Osteomas are asymptomatic and rare slow growing bony tumors in temporal bone, and should be taken into account in differential diagnosis of the osteolytic solitary skull lesions. Sometimes is associated with pain and functional loss. Only a few cases have been reported. Case Report: We describe a case of an osteoid osteoma of the temporal bone (mastoid) in a 31-year-old woman pr...
متن کاملMRgFUS of osteoid osteoma started at the Rizzoli
Background Osteoid osteoma is a bone-producing lesion frequently localized in long bones. The most common presenting symptom is pain with nocturnal exacerbation, responsive to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs [1]. Minimally invasive treatment options have become the standard of care for osteoid osteoma and at present radiofrequency ablation is the treatment of choice [2]. Only one prelimina...
